2017 RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

Regular session lessons are 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, 10 lessons per session, 45 minutes each. Classes are canceled in the event of severe weather and are announced by KLGA radio. 

Red Cross lessons are a continuing program. Your child will progress at his/her own rate. Class limit - 15. Red Cross certificates will be issued upon successful completion of class. These should be saved for future class registration. We do maintain 5 years of class records. 

2017 Swimming Lesson Registration: Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. All Learn to Swim lessons are $25.

LEVEL 1 – WATER EXPLORATION
Must be 5 years old by first day of class. Helps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Skills learned include; submerging, floating, kicking, rolling over, combined arm and leg actions and safety skills.

LEVEL 2 – PRIMARY SKILLS
Floating and kicking on front and back. Rhythmic breathing. Turning over back to front. Familiarity with rescue breathing.

LEVEL 3 – STROKE READINESS
Fundamentals of elementary backstroke. Diving. Treading water. Self-rescue skills.

LEVEL 4 – STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Deep water bobbing. Breaststroke and sidestroke. Turns at wall. Diving – stride and standing positions. Familiarity with CPR.

LEVEL 5 – STROKE REFINEMENT
Alternate breathing. Swimming underwater. Butterfly stroke. Open turns on front and back. Diving safety.

LEVEL 6 – FITNESS SWIMMER
Refine strokes so participants swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness and over greater distances. Work on turns and various training technique.

LEVEL 6 – FUNDAMENTALS OF DIVING
Introduce and practice fundamental springboard diving skills. Body alignment and control. Diving from poolside, boards and takeoff from deck. Tuck and pike positions. Rules for safe diving.


TADPOLES

AGE 4 & 5 (NON-PARENT)
JULY 10-20


This class gives young children a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety and survival concepts. Child must be 4 years old by July 18 to take this class.

TIME: 10:30 AM, (class is 30 minutes in length)
Monday through Thursday (Friday used as makeup day)

FEE: $25 (Class limit 20)


PARENT AND CHILD AQUATICS

JULY 10-20

Parent or supervisor over age 14 must be in the water with the child in this class.
All classes are 30-minutes in length.

Both levels A & B build swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more.

We ask that all children not toilet-trained wear tightly fitting rubber or plastic pants with swim diapers.

LEVEL A:  Age 6 months-2 years, Mon., Wed. Thurs. (Friday is makeup day) 11:30 AM
LEVEL B:  Age 2-4 years, Monday through Thursday (Friday is makeup day) 11:00 AM

ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS

Here's a chance for adults who want to learn to swim or improve their swimming skills. Held Wednesday evenings.

PRIVATE SWIMMING LESSONS

Private lessons are available for those preferring a one-on-one teaching environment. Five sessions of 30 minutes each are scheduled at the convenience of the instructor and the student. Call the pool to check instructor availability.

FEE: $50/payable at 1st lesson


2017 ADVANCED LESSONS


RED CROSS JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING

Are you interested in being a Lifeguard but not quite old enough yet? This course is designed to give 11 to 14 year olds a sneak peek into what it takes to become a great Lifeguard. We cover all the basics and get you ready to enter the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training program when you turn 15.

Junior Lifeguarding focuses on five key areas:
  • Introduction to lifeguarding

  • Leadership skills 
  • Fitness 
  • Professional development

TIME: 9:00-11:00 AM (2 hours per day)

RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAININGLifeguard clip

This class provides American Red Cross Lifeguard certification. Mandatory Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification is included in this class.

Lifeguard Training Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 years old by last day of class
  • Swim non-stop 300 yards demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, using the front crawl or breaststroke or combination of both.  
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.  Hands should be placed under armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.  The face may be in or out of water.  
    • Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 years on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or above the surface.  Exit the water without using ladder or steps.

  • Prerequisite testing:  May 30, 8:00-10:00 AM  
  • Class:  May 30, 31, June 1, 2, 5, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM

Participants must be able to attend entire session, no exceptions.

FEE: $160 (payable to City of Algona)
The City of Algona will reimburse training fees to all full-time lifeguards.

RED CROSS LIFEGUARD REVIEW COURSE

Open to all currently certified Red Cross Lifeguards, or those who have not expired by more than 30 days. Successful completion of this course will recertify your Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer for 2 years.

Lifeguard Review Prerequisites
  • Provide proof of valid Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Pass the following swim test on the day of class
  1. 300 yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
  2. Tread water 2 minutes using legs only
  3. Within 100 seconds you must retrieve a 10 lb. dive weight from deep end, surface and swim 20 yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using ladder

  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer at EMS facility at KRHC
    • Wednesday, May 24, 6:00-9:00 PM or Thursday, May 25, 9:00 AM-Noon (must attend one of these times)
  • Class time:  Saturday, June 3, 8:00 AM-2:00 PM

FEE:  $80 (payable to City of Algona)

RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI)WSI

This class certifies you to teach Red Cross "Learn to Swim" lessons.

WSI Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Demonstrate proficiency in six strokes: front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, and butterfly – 25 yards per stroke.
  • Tread water for 1 minute.

DATES & TIMES:

  • Class time: Thursday & Friday, June 1 & 2, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
  • Student teaching: Monday through Friday, June 5-9, 10:00 AM-Noon 

Participants must be able to attend entire session, no exceptions.

FEE: $170 (payable to City of Algona)

RED CROSS LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR COURSELifeguard instructor class

Participants will learn to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and its accompanying components.

Lifeguard Instructor Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Hold current Red Cross certificates in Lifeguarding, First aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Complete the Online Session, including the Pre-course Exam, before the first class
  • Pass the swimming prerequisites:
    • 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke (w/head down and good kick)
    •  2-minute tread using legs only (arms must remain folded)20-yard swim, retrieval of a 10-lb weight from 7-10 feet, return swim using legs only while holding the weight, and climb out of the pool in 100 seconds or less
  • Pass four rescue skill scenarios that test lifeguarding and CPR

DATES & TIMES:  July 3, 5, 6 & 7, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM

Participants must be able to attend entire session, no exceptions.
