Building Permits and Inspections
Property owners and contractors are responsible for obtaining a building permit prior to the start of remodeling or new construction. The permit fee is based on the valuation of the proposed improvements. A copy of the fee schedule link can be found below.

Building Permits are required for the following:

  • New construction
  • Interior remodeling
  • Electrical work
  • Electrical services
  • Plumbing work
  • Heating work
  • Structural work
  • Foundation work
  • Garages/storage buildings larger than 120 sq. ft.
  • Decks more than 30” above ground
  • Retaining walls higher than 4 ft.
  • Egress windows

The City of Algona has adopted the International Building Code, 2012 edition, including Appendix Chapters C, E, F, and I as published by the International Code Council as the Building Code of the City; the International Residential Code, 2012 edition, including Appendix Chapters A, B, C, D, E, F, H, J, and N as published by the International Code Council as the Residential Code of the City; the International Plumbing Code, 2012 edition, including Appendix Chapters B, D, E, and F as the Plumbing Code of the City; and the International Mechanical Code, 2012 edition, including Appendix Chapter A as published by the International Code Council as the Mechanical Code of the City. IT IS A MUNICIPAL INFRACTION TO BEGIN ANY NEW CONSTRUCTION OR REMODEL WORK WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS PRIOR TO OBTAINING A BUILDING PERMIT.
